  • Spiral Balances (spring sashes) – Coil balancesare made of coiled pieces of metal in upvc white tube. These balance springs are uncoiled when the sash is closed and recoil to provide the tension to balance the sash weight, allowing for ease of opening and closing of the window.

Glazing Bars, Beadings and Sash Horns

Glazing bars and beadings for sliding sash windows can be ordered as standard or can be designed, manufactured based on the customer’s individual specifications and requirements. As standard Wood And Home offers 4 or types of beadings. The most popular vertical or horizontal bar is “astrogal” which come in standard 21mm width.

The height of glazing bars depends on the double glaze unit thickness. For instance, when a 20mm double glaze unit is fitted the height of beading is reduced to maximum 15mm, in turn reducing the thickness of glass can help to achieve better mouldings.

Horns can be added to sashes both internally and externally, depends on client requires. We offer 4 standard types which are most common in Victorian windows.

Available Timber

We only use cross grain laminated (engineered) timber which is created by sawing the timber into strips, and then bonding it back together with the grains facing opposite directions. During this process all knots (the weakest points) and being cut off to maximise strength of the timber.

When individual strips try to twist in opposite directions, they simply counter each other and the frame distortion is minimal. Predicted life-spam of premium engineered casement windows (assuming they are maintained properly ) – is min 50 years, which can be extended with adequate refurbishment.

Our sash windows can be made of high quality timber of which approximate characteristics is shown aside.

PINE
A soft wood white or pale yellow timber. light weight and straight grained. it is the most popular timber occurring in Europe. it is not as dense as hardwood but resists shrinking and swelling very well.
OAK
A hard wood that can be found in most countries of Europe. prefer dry soil rather than damp areas. comparing to meranti it is slightly stronger.
RED MERANTI
A hard wood which comes from Southeast Asia. it has relatively good outdoor durability and strength. can be found in low-lying rain forests in mountainous regions. comparing cost effectiveness it offers best option for hardwood.

Due to increased exposure to weathering (both rain water and UV day light) cill and cill extensions in softwood windows are made from hardwood – Red Meranti.

Main differences between hardwood & softwood

  • Hardwood is more dense, absorb water less and resist longer against any potential moisture penetration through coating.
  • It is harder, so dent less when accidentally damaged.
  • Hardwood once sprayed has visible natural grains, so it looks like timber, likewise pine has much thicker primer to cover all grains which are inconsistence, so the finish is plain smooth.

The most important is to maintain the coating, the factory applied coating should last around 10 years, depends on if the elevation is subjected to heavy weather condition like rain and sun. If water start penetrating though the protective coating hardwood will last longer and will not absorb water as much as softwood, but if coating is maintained both wood should last as long. We recommand using hardwood for timber sash windows London.

TIPS while taking measurements for box sash window!

It has been recommended for new sash windows to allow for a 84mm frame jab, and for frame jambs to be placed on each side and inserted into the wall and in turn which allows the sash cord mechanism to be covered. Regarding the external view, it has been suggested that we allow a 20-30mm of the visible to be facing, whereas the rest is hidden.

During new openings, when the catnic lintels are installed the facing frame-head can be reduced from 84mm to 40mm (it is the frame’s minimum thickness of sliding sash windows). From an external point of view, the overall framing will look symmetric.
